Taken from GT152 – Ex 1: This is a rock blues track in the style of The Jeff Healey Band. The solo features two of Jeff’s trademarks: use and development of melodic cells and wide bendings. From bar 5 to 8 you can see how he often developed a melodic cell messing around with the rhythm. From bar 9 to 12 there’s a heavy use of wide bending featuring both 1½ and a 2 whole tone bend. The last four bars are a combination of the two elements.

Taken from GT175 – Lick 18 Brad Paisley: This is a crazy Brad Paisley line. He often throws in something that is quite unexpected! This line starts with natural notes, moves to natural harmonics (which are quite tricky at that speed!) and ends with natural notes. It’s a journey! Luckily he didn’t use the G-Bender on this one!

Taken from GT169 – Lick 20: For the jazz/fusion lovers this is a very easy idea that you can use to create some tension in your improvisation. This lick is built using one single shape that is moved down in the neck. Metheny often takes a shape like this and moves it around. If you are clever enough to hide it well it just sounds fantastic and unpredictable.

Taken from GT175 – Lick 12 Mark Knopfler: This lick is played with just index and thumb of the picking hand (thumb is ‘p’ whereas index is ‘i’). Mark Knopfler played this lick everywhere on the first few Dire Straits records. Such an awesome lick!
