Taken from GT157 – Ex 6: This is a short composition to show how you can incorporate some of the movements weʼve seen so far. This one is influenced by country virtuosos Brad Paisley (for the semitone bends on the low strings) and Jerry Donahue (for the bends behind the nut). All the notes should ring out as much as possible so itʼll be worth spending some time on the fingerings before actually attempt performing the piece. The guitar is tuned in Drop D tuning (detune the low E string down to D). For the bend behind the nut use the 3rd finger with the 2nd behind to help. Light strings are highly recommended on this one. Let all the notes ring whenever possible.

Taken from GT175 – Lick 16 Albert Lee: Mr Country Boy plays this line very often over a G chord. It’s such a great line that I would suggest to practice it in the most common country keys. It’s also a good workout for your hybrid picking technique which is used heavily in this example.

Taken from GT175 – Lick 7 Jimi Hendrix: This is very common rock/blues lick in the style of Jimi Hendrix. Bend the 11th fret on the 2nd string using your 3rd finger. Whilst still bending try to catch the 3rd string with your 2nd finger (this will result in a pre bend on the 10) and release it down. If done properly this should sound like a bend that goes up followed by another that goes down (release).

Taken from GT175 – Lick 20 Brent Mason Advanced Double Stop 2: This is a slightly longer lines using double stops. This one features a different movement for the picking hand: the pattern is odd (3 notes) so the picking directions are fingers (for the double stop), up, down. Practising this cell in isolation will make the lick easier to execute.
